Our mission is to create housing and service options that model, with respect and dignity, sustainable, environmentally sensitive, affordable communities for people of limited resources. We included all the usual components of our Works spaces in London and New York but wanted to create a Californian aesthetic to connect to the new location.

Married women lived under the legal doctrine of coverture, in which their individual, legal identities were subsumed under those of their husbands. The oft-cited legal commentator, Sir William Blackstone—foreshadowing the refrain of tradwives today—asserted that wives’ submission to their husbands was “for her protection and benefit,” making her “a favourite” under the law. Membership is offered month to month and provides access to all locations, which caters to the bi-coastal business traveler for ease and accessibility.

Seeking feedback from people served makes programs more responsive and effective. She is a media/marketing intern for the LA Girl, her favorite things consist of traveling, exploring, and curating events. Whether it is at our Bookstore Cafe, Special Events, or Thrift Shops, Housing Works is powered by a vibrant community of volunteers who lend their time, passion and skills to the many roles within our organization.

HOUSEWORKS?

Housing Works is a healing community of people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Our mission is to end the dual crises of homelessness and AIDS through relentless advocacy, the provision of lifesaving services, and entrepreneurial businesses that sustain our efforts. Each generation of American women seemingly needed to be reminded—through the law, economic constraints, and even now in social media—of the “naturalness” of her submissive role. These constant reminders, however, suggest equally constant remonstrations from women, albeit with mixed results. We designed [much of] the furniture in-house and then translated them across the Atlantic with our trusted US-based manufacturers. This helped to keep a consistency of style across coasts from the United Kingdom to the United States and helps our members feel comfortable and at home wherever they might be when they visit.

In the 19th century, for example, women’s organizations sought to change the law at the state level to allow married women to own property in certain circumstances, finding some success. But it was not until the 1970s that married women had the right to obtain credit cards separate from their husbands. Some colonies, and later states, permitted divorce under certain circumstances (and the number of states providing for access to marital separation would expand over time), though relatively few women availed themselves of this legal mechanism. Given the other stringencies of coverture, life as a single woman and a single mother likely proved a greater trial for many. Social expectations for wives likewise filled the pages of novels like The Coquette (1797) and Pamela (1740) which extolled the virtues of white femininity.

Our nine single site buildings are Young Burlington (specifically housing transitional aged youth), Teague Terrace, T. Bailey Manor, Palo Verde, 88th and Vermont, Florence Mills, Gramercy, Stanford, and Bungalow Gardens (specifically housing formerly incarcerated individuals). In many ways, they are exploited as pawns of the right, laundering extremist views and transforming them into ostensibly more palatable packaging. This was perhaps the intent behind Senator Katie Britt’s ill-received response to President Biden’s State of the Union address in early March; Senator Tommy Tuberville indicated as much. Yet her performance of womanhood—her breathy vocalization dubbed “fundie baby voice” by critics—appeared as empty as her kitchen and did nothing to soften the blow of her party’s apocalyptic interpretation of current events. But their glorification of these views obscures the reality of the consequences of women’s submission and subordination to men, whether it is a “choice” or not. This also helped provide an interesting backdrop for our carefully selected lighting and a contrast to some of the richer fabric textures and tones in the upholstery below.

Part of the brand since 2018, the very talented interior designer has overseen the creation and completion of several Soho House and Soho Works projects in North America, from Austin to Nashville. The best way to use BuildZoom is to let us recommend contractors foryour remodeling projects. BuildZoom is a database of every licensed contractor in the United States. We work hard to figure out who the great contractors are, and who the badcontractors are. The California State License Board recommends getting at least three written bids before hiring a contractor. Do not automatically accept the lowest bid - an abnormally low bid may indicate the contractor made a mistake and is not including the same work quoted by their competitors.

These popular books were entertaining for readers, much like contemporary tradwives’ social media posts, but also didactic in their demonstrations of what would become of “fallen” women who had chosen their partners poorly. For instance, Eliza Wharton, The Coquette’s protagonist, died giving birth to a stillborn, illegitimate child after eschewing a pious suitor in favor of an attractive cad. Tradwives have not escaped the notice of journalists and social commentators who track their popular rise on various social media platforms. Some analyses of the tradwife trend reference the 1950s, while other commentators focus on influencers like Hannah Neeleman of Ballerina Farm fame, who perform the role of 19th-century homesteaders (despite Neeleman’s occlusion of her husband’s inherited wealth). But the ideology behind the fad has much deeper—and more insidious—roots in American history.

We recognize that simply moving homeless people into physical housing does not, in itself, address the essential roots of homelessness. A major part of this effort is to partner with others with similar aspirations – housing providers, healthcare providers, public and private agencies. Housing Works serves as a model of how to create community and work to improve the lives of people struggling in a complex society.

The colors and patterns we selected, along with the finishes and artwork, help create a perfect sister space for our West Hollywood club. With locations on nearly every continent, there’s no hotter international membership club right now than the Soho House. Founded in 1995, the brand has now expanded to include other venue types including a chic coworking and collaborative space called Soho Works, which was founded in London. Open to both members and non-members, the Los Angeles location was designed by Harriet Liley who is the lead designer for both Soho Works and Soho House.

He only does this with a few restaurants and chefs in the world, so consider this location lucky. But don’t try to take a photo of anything, because Soho House Weho and a no camera policy. Since 1990, we have provided comprehensive services to over 30,000 homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS or at-risk of infection. These services including housing, job training, legal assistance, and comprehensive healthcare. Located in the arts district of Downtown LA, Soho Warehouse began as an industrial building and recording studio. Other amenities include a sitting room for connecting and working, the Mandolin Taverna restaurant and bar, and drawing room for events and workshops.

Depot at Hyde Park is a supportive housing development in the City of Los Angeles that opened in mid 2023. Located at the site of the abandoned Hyde Park Branch Library site in South Los Angeles, Depot at Hyde Park is an adaptive reuse and an inner city infill development. The development consists of 43 – 1, 2, and 3-bedroom units for unhoused individuals and families earning up to 30% of area median income and for low-income individuals and families earning up to 40% of area median income. Third party professional property management will be provided by John Stewart Company. MIST assists chronically homeless individuals and families in locating Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) units acquired through our partnerships with non-profit housing developers and private landlords.

As we build relationships, one person at a time, one organization at a time, our goal is to participate in systemic change that actively addresses barriers and boundaries that limit people and ignore disabilities. Located in the Glassell Park community of Los Angeles, T. Bailey Manor opened in August 2017 as a mixed use development, including 46 newly constructed apartments and 2 commercial spaces in a renovated existing building. The property serves households with special needs, including formerly homeless veterans, other special needs individuals and families and persons with developmental disabilities. The property serves formerly unhoused individuals including veterans and persons with developmental disabilities and other special needs. To support the needs and aspirations of residents, the development features a community room, meeting rooms, a computer room, and a laundry room. Outdoor areas offer an open courtyard with edible landscaping; along the side and rear yards, colorful vines and landscaped areas screen and shade the building while providing a calming and attractive space.

This square foot space features open workspaces, private offices, conference rooms, and a gorgeously designed bar, featuring a daily breakfast spread for members as well as a full-service coffee and espresso station. With floor-to-ceiling windows and majestic views, it's an ideal spot to arrange a meeting or just to be productive among peers, geared toward those working in creative industries. The BuildZoom score is based on a number of factors including the contractor's license status, insurance status, verified work history, standing with local consumer interest groups, verified reviews from other BuildZoom users and self-reported feedback from the contractor. Although this is the smallest Soho house amongst all Soho locations, it gives different feels from the other houses in LA. You will find members at this location on a getaway from busy city life and enjoying beautiful, intimate beach views. This house is next door to Nobu Malibu making it the perfect place for great food, warm vibes and maybe even a Hadid or two.

Conduct literature provided women and men with pointed guidance about how to choose a spouse. But Williams’ definition moved beyond the idyllic character of June Cleaver or even the Victorian-era presumptions of separate spheres. There is a science to the development of a layout and furniture selection dedicated to Works versus House, but our members in Los Angeles love it. Our sites form a contrasting set of unique locations across eight global locations. They are always close or connected to a House so you can easily put your laptop down and head to the House to grab a drink. We have different lighting levels, print rooms, and seating with a real focus on ergonomics, mixed in with lounge groups for more comfortable, casual work.

House Democrats push ahead with SDWA reforms, PFAS regulations JM Eagle

house committee on energy and commerce

President Biden’s ban on American LNG exports—a blatant political decision—jeopardizes all of this. The Committee on Energy and Commerce is the oldest standing legislative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives and is vested with the broadest jurisdiction of any congressional authorizing committee. The bill was signed into law by President Biden on April 24, 2024, starting the clock on TikTok’s requirement to divest from CCP-controlled ByteDance. — The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, along with the American Farm Bureau Federation, California Chamber of Commerce, Central Valley Business Federation, Los Angeles County Business Federation, and Western Growers Association, filed a lawsuit against the state of California in the U.S.

U.S. Chamber Sues California Over Climate Disclosure Laws

Not only would these misguided regulations limit consumer choice; they would also increase our reliance on China. The United States does not yet have the domestic critical mineral supply chain necessary to support the proposed transition. As China currently controls 90% of the EV supply chain in aggregate, any push to make EVs the dominant type of vehicle on the market would essentially hand China the keys to America’s auto future. [...] The United States would also be relying on minerals from China, which has an atrocious track record when it comes to environmental and labor standards. As much as we would like to decrease our nation’s emissions, greenhouse gases, and criteria pollutants are a global issue and do not stop at international borders. Georgia is also home to the well-known Vogtle nuclear power plant, the first newly constructed nuclear reactor to be built in the United States in over three decades.

The Committee leaders requested answers to a series of detailed questions by April 29, 2024. Instead of rushing into a ‘green’ energy transition, we should follow a pragmatic approach to an ‘energy expansion’ movement.

These policies undermine American energy security by forcing states to fundamentally change how they generate electricity. At a time when more than half the nation is at elevated risk of forced blackouts, the administration’s unrelenting rush-to-green agenda is shutting down the types of generation needed to keep the lights on and raising costs across the board. On June 6, 2023, Chair Rodgers led a letter to EPA from all Energy and Commerce Republicans on the agency’s CPP2.0.

As a result of the outage, critical services affecting patient care—including billing services, claims transmittals, and eligibility verifications—became inoperable. Though UnitedHealth first notified users that it expected the disruption to “last at least through the day,” several of the company’s products have now been inoperable for more than a month. “Change Healthcare is a central player in the country’s health care system, which has been upended by the recent breach,” t he bipartisan Committee leaders wrote to Mr. Witty. “We are interested in your efforts to secure Change Healthcare’s systems since it was acquired by your company and the efforts you are taking to restore system functionality and support patients and providers affected by the attack.” Change Healthcare’s platforms touch an estimated one in three U.S. patient records. But the petroleum association argues that giving the energy commission the ability to cap profits could carry negative consequences for the industry. The House Energy and Commerce Committee last week gave mostly party-line approval to a pair of bills that have drawn opposition from AMWA and other water sector and municipal organizations because of changes they would make to the Safe Drinking Water Act’s (SDWA) contaminant regulatory process, among other concerns. One of the measures will be up for a vote before the full House this week as part of the INVEST in America Act, a larger package of infrastructure legislation developed by House Democratic leaders.

Yesterday, thanks to the bipartisan efforts of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, as well as many other Members of the House, H.R. 7521, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, was signed into law. Until a new Representative is elected, the vacant congressional office cannot take or advocate positions of public policy. Constituents may choose to express opinions on legislation or issues to your elected Senators or wait until a new Representative is elected and takes office. The staff of the vacant office can assist constituents with general information concerning the status of legislation, but cannot provide analysis of issues or render opinions. The legislation will require oil companies to provide the state with more information around planned maintenance, which could make it easier to avoid having several refineries go offline at the same time, drastically reducing supply. Proponents also argue that giving the California Energy Commission the ability to set a profits penalty could motivate companies to keep prices down. The bill prohibits commissioners from setting a penalty if they find that it will have adverse consequences on Californians and increase gas prices.

“This bill is a senseless attack on domestic energy production that will only harm hardworking Californians in the field by creating a hostile business climate,” said Assemblymember Vince Fong (R-Bakersfield). California lawmakers on Monday approved Gov. Gavin Newsom’s legislation to increase transparency in the oil industry, ending a special session he called last year to penalize excessive profits. Oil and gas producers in the U.S. work daily to make energy clean, reliable, and affordable for Americans and people in the unempowered world. The Biden administration’s January decision to ban new permits for LNG export facilities will raise costs in the U.S. and prevent us from supplying our allies and those in the developing world. This legislation, which was passed out of Committee and advanced to the House Floor, would reform the licensing process to protect existing hydropower resources and remove barriers to rapidly expand hydropower development.

The bill establishes the Division of Petroleum Market Oversight within the energy commission. The division will have the power to subpoena records from the oil industry and refer violations to the California attorney general for prosecution. Instead of a cap approved by lawmakers, SBX1-2 allows the energy commission to establish a maximum gross gasoline refining margin and a penalty for exceeding that margin, if they deem it necessary.

Katie Lawrence is a Southeast Texas native who graduated 18th in her high school class with a GPA of 4.25. She attended college in the Houston area and began writing for OnlyInYourState in 2015. Today, Katie writes, edits, and performs several other tasks for OnlyInYourState and has never been more passionate about a job before. We will move to a new, bigger location where we will have much-needed space to accommodate the needs of the cats and our growth plans. Step inside the café that's helping cats get adopted one cup of coffee at a time.

Serving our Houston neighbors both human and feline.

We will establish a volunteer-run Trap-Neuter-Release program to serve our community of neighbors both human and feline. This program will have the capacity to lend traps, teach TNR skills, and provide vouchers for vet visits. Collectively, we adopt approximately 100 cats per year and foster cats at a time.

Large populations of free-roaming cats can be problematic for a number of reasons including cat health, human public health, and ecological/environmental protection. Risa Rose, an avid yogi and UCLA graduate, loves to immerse herself in all things spiritual. If she isn't spending time in nature with her boyfriend and their dog, she's providing tarot & horary astrology sessions. Between conversation and fawning over felines, the hour went by very quickly. El Gato's cats (between 14 and 19 in residence) are a delightful combination of shy, social and playful. In addition to Sweetie, some of my favorites included Inky, a large black floofer, Jean Baptise, a tuxedo and Addison the calico.

By the end of May, we'll have created a charming and mystical environment for our cats and guests, including the installation of a 7ft tree. The main benefit of adopting from us is having the ability to meet several cats and kittens in a peaceful, living-room-like setting. As such, we only process applications for our customers that have visited with us and have selected a cat or kitten. You can apply to adopt in advance of your visit if you have a scheduled session with us.

Houston became a virtual ghost town and El Gato's business suffered greatly. After checking in, we were led into the cat lounge by Angela, a friendly cat staffer who introduced me to Sweetie, who is not just sweet, but sassy and rocks a very unique look. Visit the cafe’s website or Facebook page to learn more.

Why do I have to pay to play with cats?

This helps to relieve the burden placed on traditional shelters in Houston that are frequently at capacity. Since El Gato Coffeehouse opened in April 2017, we have found homes for nearly 430 previously-homeless cats. Since the formation of El Gato Charities in 2020, we have already TNRed 18 cats and successfully socialized and found furrever homes for 4 of the 18. For a taste of Latin American cuisine and culture, head to El Gato Night Market in Lynwood.

We depend on our guest's cover to support the cost of our beautiful facilities in the Heights, our wonderful caring staff and for the vetting costs and supplies provided to our resident cats. We are only able to provide this service because our customers and donors see the value in our mission of adopting cats in a comfortable, stress-free environment. After making some short term adjustments, like reducing opening hours, things have bounced back stronger than ever. She and her team have successfully facilitated an amazing 114 adoptions in just one years time, via their nationally known rescue partner, Friends for Life.

We understand that the term "cat cafe" can seem deceiving. Unfortunately, the answer is no, we are not a "BYOC(at)" establishment. We are a space that cares for adoptable cats and we cannot allow cats from home to be brought into our space.

Renee shared their stories with me as we moved around the room, stopping for each kitty. Then, I met Renee, the owner who gave me the scoop on El Gato. They opened in April, 2017 and had just started to gain loyal customers and steady traffic when Hurricane Harvey hit in August.

We over a 7 day trial adoption period called a sleepover. Once approved, you receive a sleepover to ensure the cat is a good fit for you, your family and your other furrbabies. El Gato Coffeehouse is Houston's first and only cat cafe and rescue. In response to COVID-19, El Gato Charities was formed in July 2020 to bridge the financial gap necessary to operate as a foster home to cats. El Gato Coffeehouse and El Gato Charities work in tandem with one another. But mostly, it was because El Gato is a truly stand-out cat cafe- a gorgeous space filled with friendly cats and caring people.

Beset with the myriad challenges posed by the pandemic, El Gato emerged with the intention of making the necessary funds to house 14 – 20 foster cats. Thus, El Gato Charities was formed to work in tandem with El Gato Coffeehouse, Houston’s only cat cafe and rescue. For individual visits with cats, children must be over age 5 and 12 is the minimum age for yoga with cats. All childern under 16 must be accompanied by a supervising adult. If you are interested in being one of the first to check out the new location, you'll select sessions in the Cat Studio. We'll continue to offer sessions in our original Cat Cottage location as well.

Visits with cats - Individual sessions are for one person, each person needs a separate individual booking. Private sessions are a group booking covering up to 6 people for 1 hour. Additional guests are welcome for the privates, but will be charged $18/ person upon entry with a max capacity of 20 people. We do host kid birthday parties as a private booking, however, this is only available for ages 9 and over in order to maintain a peaceful enviroment for our cats.

We'll be kicking off at the new location on Tuesday, March 12 just in time for our expanding Spring Break Hours. First, we visited with a friend from Germany, yet another convert into our crazy-for-cats lifestyle. Second, it was my birthday, which always helps infuse every activity with a festive air.

The best cordless phone

The VTech IS offers impressive range, good-enough voice quality, four handsets, and every other feature we can think of. If you want everything a cordless phone has to offer, the IS is the model you’re looking for. And even though it’s more expensive than our other picks, the price per handset is actually less than that of the AT&T DL72210.

VTech Rugged Cordless Phone with Bluetooth

I highly recommend the Panasonic KX-TGD610B cordless phone for elderly individuals who want a straightforward, no-frills cordless option for reliable home calling. This guide shares my top recommendations on models, features, and setups that make phones senior-friendly. Discover what works so you can confidently and comfortably live life on your terms. On the plus side, the Panasonic KX-TGK222EW comes with a 30-minute digital answering machine, and offers 18 hours of talk time, enough for even the chattiest members of your family. It also comes with nuisance call blocking for up to 50 numbers (take that telemarketers!) and has a Do Not Disturb mode so you won't be interrupted while watching your favourite TV show, unless the call is from one of your VIPs.

thoughts on “Best Home Phones for Seniors: 8 Simple Landline Phone Options”

However, if you have a family member with mobility or memory issues, the most useful feature here is the ability to attach a photo to a single speed dial button. Panasonic’s KX-TGC352B is inexpensive compared with other two-handset bundles. But it doesn’t have smart call blocking, a digital answering system, or a Bluetooth cell phone connection. Panasonic’s KX-TGM430B is another variant of our amplified pick that offers the same features and volume, plus a Bluetooth connection to your cell phone. However, it costs much more, so we recommend it only if a cell phone connection is especially important to you.

The BT Premium Cordless Phone also comes with a Virtual Assistant, which ably screens incoming calls so you can decide whether to accept them or not. And there’s a Do No Disturb function which stops the calls from interrupting your dinner / sleep / favourite TV show, while still allowing calls from friends and family you’ve tagged as VIPs. A phone optimized for your hearing, vision, or dexterity limitations can greatly boost independence and confidence when living independently.

The 10 Best Cordless Phones in 2024 to Have at Home

What the DL72210 lacks in extended range, it makes up for in call quality. When reviewing sample recordings, our testers almost universally preferred this phone’s audio over the clips from the iPhone and the two other cordless phones we tested. And audio expert Lauren Dragan, a Wirecutter senior staff writer, told us that the DL72210 actually sounded clearer through her iPhone's earpiece than another iPhone did. A button on the side of the handset, above the volume rocker, allows you to cycle through six preset tones with different adjustments to the high-end, midrange, and low-end qualities of the voice on the other end. “For example, if I was talking to somebody and I hit the button, I could go from a more low-pitch emphasis to another with a mid-pitch emphasis,” she said. Panasonic also offers custom tone settings, if you’re willing to fiddle around with the phone’s menu, but our tester was happy with the presets.

Cordless phones are ugly, clunky, often-frustrating anachronisms that might seem like antique additions to modern homes. And most cordless phones are made by the same two manufacturers, with vanishingly few differences among the many mediocre models. Still, cordless phones remain popular, and they can be extremely helpful in an emergency or in homes with poor cell reception. After testing 12 top candidates, we’re sure AT&T’s DL72210 is the best old-fashioned handset.

SMPL Memory Phone

During calls, I could discern conversations clearly and easily adjust the volume as needed. Adjustable Amplified Sound – With four volume settings up to maximum loudness, this phone caters to mild to severe hearing loss. I found the amplified sound clear without distortion for improved conversation comprehension. A burner phone—if the name didn’t give it away—is a phone that someone buys with no intention of keeping or using over the long term. You might be looking for a landline if you're stuck at home and the mobile signal is iffy, or maybe because you just like the way they look.

Gigaset Comfort Cordless Phone

While burner phones are still a way of getting a second phone number, there are apps, both free and paid, that accomplish the same thing. Try “Burner” as a starter, for iPhone and Android, if all you need is another set of digits to give out to potential dates or something. We love the fact that the Gigaset SL450A GO  enables you to add VIP status to your favourite people, so their calls always get through. And in includes a built-in calendar that serves up reminders about upcoming events, including birthdays. The Gigaset SL450A GO also offers high quality voice calls with three different audio profiles.

During testing, I observed how even people with arthritis could hold the phone comfortably. Reliability and Safety – Since the corded base still functions even if the power goes out, this phone provides dependable access to call 911 or loved ones in an emergency. Noise Reduction – Built-in noise reduction technology automatically suppresses background interference to enable hearing the voice more distinctly. After extensive testing, I found this phone provides crucial sound enhancements to boost clarity while retaining a versatile interface. Noise Reduction – This technology clarifies the voice of callers and reduces background noise interference. During testing, it noticeably enhanced call quality and comprehension.

And just like the BT Halo, you can also pair the handset to your smartphone and use it to make mobile calls. Other goodies include a block anonymous calls function, which enables you to avoid those annoying telemarketers – numbers for incoming call without Caller ID will simply be displayed onscreen, but otherwise won't disturb you. The black finish and minimalist lines might make it too stark for a few people, but we'd be very happy to give this phone a home. The separate answering machine has store up to 30 minutes' worth of messages and you can even listen to your messages when you're away from home.

In recent years is that retailers are increasingly resorting to the drastic step of barricading entire swaths of their stores behind lock and key. To stay as private as possible, you’ll want to keep your phone turned off until you’ve left your house and are in a location where you plan to actually put it to use. If you don’t plan on using its Bluetooth connection or wifi connection, you can turn those settings off too (if possible).

Having verified that all three phones had good-enough voice quality, we simply navigated around each phone and played with its respective features to see how well they were implemented. (None of them were particularly great, but some were worse.) How did the handsets and their buttons feel? Several of the features were binary—they either existed or didn’t, so we naturally preferred the models where they were present. Because everyone now lives in a golden age of smartphones, cordless phones don’t get much attention anymore. When we published a previous version of this guide, in 2016, we noted that there were relatively few independent, trustworthy reviews of cordless phones. Now, more than four years later, it’s nearly impossible to find up-to-date thoughts from reputable sources.

The 10 Best Cordless Phones in 2024 Cordless Phone Reviews

walmart house phones

The base station comes with a built-in answering machine that can record up to 30 minutes of calls. When you need a phone but don't want your cell phone to get damaged or wet, this VTech rugged cordless phone is the solution. With large buttons and easy-to-understand controls, this is a great phone for senior citizens. The best feature here is the set of four buttons on the handset that can be pre-programmed to call anyone — 911, a family member, a neighbor — in an emergency. A great choice for smaller spaces, Panasonic's cordless phone system has a lot of useful features like caller ID, call blocker, silent mode, and intercom paging.

How traceable is a burner phone?

“And the key here is not so much the volume as it is the quality of the sound.” Some people benefit more from louder calls, while others may need the high or low end of their caller’s voice boosted, and still others require both. If you're the type of person who saves every number you get, this cordless phone from Gigaset is for you. It can store up to 200 phone numbers, and a list of 150 blocked phone numbers, too.

Our pick: AT&T DL72210

I highly recommend the SMPL Hands-Free Dial Photo Memory Corded Phone as the ideal home phone for elderly individuals, especially those with vision, hearing, or memory challenges. A Times analysis from 2022 found that stores in higher-income areas locked up fewer items even in places where property crime rates were higher, creating an additional burden for shoppers in certain neighborhoods. Charis Kubrin, a professor of criminology at UC Irvine who studies retail theft, said that although some stores lock up lots of merchandise, others cage almost nothing. More than 40 retailers are testing the Freedom Case in stores, Budano said, including a national chain he declined to name. The BT Premium Cordless Phone is unlikely to turn any heads in the design stakes, but it lives up to its name, despite being very affordable.

The Best Cordless Phone

But again, it’s not shocking that a $15 phone performed worse than handsets that cost several times more. The KX-TGM420W is compliant with the TIA-1083 standard, and Devlin didn’t observe any interference with her hearing aids. If you use a headset or induction neck loop, you can plug it into the jack on the side of the handset. Flashing lights on both the base station and the phone itself indicate when you’re getting a call, and the included slow-speech function is especially useful for reviewing voicemail messages. The KX-TGM420W also offers the standard features we look for in any cordless phone, including a base speakerphone and handset speakerphone, call blocking, and a button on the base station to help you find the handset.

Corded phones with super loud ringers ensure calls are heard, but cord length limits mobility. With its easy-to-use accessibility features, blocking of nuisance calls, integrated answering machine, and reliable corded base, this system provides a comprehensive communication solution tailored for the elderly. For seniors seeking a fully-equipped cordless home phone with crucial accessibility for hearing difficulties, my trials identified the Panasonic KX-TGM420W as an excellent choice. The amplified sound, call screening, and innovative Slow Talk button enable clearer communication. Amplified Volume – With handset volumes adjustable up to an extra loud 40dB boost, this phone accommodates those with hearing aids or moderate hearing loss.

Easy Programming – Entering speed dial numbers is straightforward with the included store button. Limited Dial Mode – For those with dementia concerns, “photo dial only” mode restricts outgoing calls to just the programmed photo buttons. Handset Grip – The phone comes with a soft foam handset cover that provides an ergonomic, non-slip grip.

iSoHo Big Button Corded Phone

Speed Dial – 9-speed dial buttons allow frequently called numbers to be stored for quick access through the phonebook button. Adjustable Loud Ringer – With 6 ringer volumes to choose from, this phone accomodates even severe hearing loss. I appreciated how clearly I could hear the ringer from other rooms of my home. Other useful features include a speakerphone (except the basic model), hearing aid compatibility to reduce interference, and wall mountability for placement flexibility. Intuitive Interface – The phone eliminates clutter by only including essential functions needed for basic calling.

Acenis Big Button Phone

But, the BT4600 Big Button Phone also has more appeal for anyone with a disability due to its easier usability. At nearly $200, Clarity’s XLC8 is the most expensive amplified phone we tested. It doesn’t excel in any of the features it shares with the Panasonic KX-TGM420W, and it doesn’t offer any additional functionality. Our tester also found its tone adjustment to be neither easy to use nor effective. Because Panasonic’s KX-TGE633M comes with a third handset, it’s more expensive than the AT&T DL72210.

With an astounding 2,300-foot range from the base to each handset, this system can be expanded to include up to 12 phones. We used the same criteria to research amplified phones, with additional qualifications specific to their intended purpose. This phone has every feature you could want, as well as the longest range of any model we tested. I hope the recommendations and tips in this guide give you a helpful starting point to find a phone that works for you. And don’t be afraid to ask loved ones for help customizing and practicing with your new phone.

I highly recommend the VTech SN5147 combination corded and cordless phone system for elderly individuals who want the reliability of a landline plus the convenience of a wireless handset. Expect to pay around $10–$40 for the phone and to purchase a prepaid plan on top of that. Panasonic’s KX-TGE675B doesn’t offer smart call blocking, something we consider a necessary feature for phones in its price range. Mobility around the home and accessibility features take higher priority over complex apps and messaging. Cordless phones need to have handsets with large, legible buttons. While it lacks advanced features, the TelPal Classic Phone provides a straightforward landline experience perfect for users wanting retention of a retro dial phone without complication.

This two-phone package has respectable range and sounds better than any other handset we tested. It also offers premium features such as smart call blocking and a Bluetooth cell phone connection at a non-premium price. Keeping your landline doesn't mean being tethered to the wall with a corded phone, though.

The intuitive photo dialing especially supports those with memory challenges to easily connect with loved ones. I highly recommend it for boosting confidence when living independently. Visual Ring Indicator – A bright flashing light alerts to incoming calls. Paired with the loud ringer, this visual indicator ensures calls do not go missed.

Thankfully, even the worst-performing phones made it several houses down the street (about 130 feet) before the signal weakened. I’ve been reviewing phones and mobile accessories since 2011 and covering them for Wirecutter since 2015. This includes researching hundreds of cordless phones and testing dozens over the past five years.

This phone offers good range, great voice quality, and more features than most others at this price. I recommend the TelPal Classic Corded Phone for elderly individuals who want a basic, straightforward landline phone with a retro look. After testing, I found this classic phone provides simplified calling without complex functions or small buttons.

Some phones offered a range upwards of 450 feet in our tests, but 260 feet should still be plenty for use in most people’s homes. To put that number in perspective, we were able to get seven houses down the street with the DL72210 before our test call began to break up. AT&T’s CL82219—a similar phone in the same price range but with fewer features—was able to go a house and a half farther, which is great, but that extra range is probably not necessary unless you have an especially large property. If you have hearing loss, an amplified phone’s boosted voice levels and tone adjustments may make it easier for you to communicate. “Everybody’s hearing loss is different,” Lise Hamlin, director of communications for the Hearing Loss Association of America, told us.

The KX-PRS120 is part of Panasonic’s Premium Design range – and it shows. The handset combines large, square-shaped number keys and a curved back for style and ergonomics, while its 5.6cm QVGA colour display boasts a smartphone-like graphical user interface, giving you easy access to all its options. We also like the fact that you can store up to 200 name and number contacts and then copy them to other BT 8610 handsets that you own. It also has a pleasingly long talk and standby times and can record 60 minutes of voicemail messages – yes, enough even for your older relatives.

The most challenging hike on the island is the Trans-Catalina Trail, a rugged three- to four-day backcountry route from one end of the island to the other. Among the pluses are camping spots near pristine beaches. During the pandemic, the 38½-mile route was realigned by the Catalina Conservancy to offer more picturesque views and less interaction with the public.

Foodies will love the island’s new dining choices. We’ve already mentioned Toyon Grill and the Naughty Fox, but several restaurants have changed hands. Catalina has a rich history that includes hosting countless Hollywood stars. During the pandemic shutdown, the staff at Catalina Island Museum (217 Metropole Ave.) kept busy setting up new exhibitions and adding to the facility’s permanent collections. When you visit, expect to learn about the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne and even Winston Churchill, who was fond of fishing the island’s waters. Another helpful improvement is a new reservation system that allows campers to book online. Santa Catalina may be only an hour from the Southern California mainland, but it feels a world away. During the pandemic, it may as well have been a universe away. Leisure travel was banned and the island’s lifeblood — its visitors — disappeared.
